"The Nature of Sound" by Yogi Bhajan

“Every element in the universe is in a constant state of vibration manifested to us as light, sound, and energy. The human senses perceive only a fraction of the infinite range of vibration, so it is difficult to comprehend that the Word mentioned in the Bible is actually the totality of vibration which underlies and sustains all creation. A person can tune his or her own consciousness into the awareness of that totality with the use of a mantra. By vibrating in rhythm with the breath to a particular sound that is proportional to the creative sound, or sound current, one can expand one’s sensitivity to the entire spectrum of vibration. It is similar to striking a note on a stringed instrument. In other words as you vibrate, the universe vibrates with you.”

Naad Yoga, the Yoga of Sound

The experience of how sound vibrations affect the body, mind, and spirit through the movement of the tongue, mouth, and chemical changes in the brain is the science of Naad Yoga. Mantras are formulas that alter the patterns of the mind and the chemistry of the brain.  The power of a mantra is in its vibration.  Mantra is the creative projection of the mind through sound. Mantra replaces the noise of the mind, clearing away the clouds of doubt, or whatever else is preventing you from hearing the song of your Soul. Chanting brings clarity and unlimited healing potential across time and space, uplifting your consciousness to reveal the clear blue sky of your True Self, your Sat Nam. Sat means Truth, affirming your true identity. Your Naam is your vibrational identity, and your Sat Nam is the highest vibration within you, God. “Sat Nam” is a wonderful mantra to start with and live with. Inhale Sat, exhale Nam. In short, you are affirming your Infinite Light, repeating, “I am Truth.” Healing with Word is a powerful way to change your mind.

Experience the Transformational Power of Sacred Sound

“What we vibrate, we become.” - Yogi Bhajan

In a Universe made of sound, the way we interact with sound creates our experience.

Sound is a powerful form of structured energy which can have a predictable effect on the human psyche and chakras.  Scientist are now confirming this ancient knowledge. The recent “String Theory” suggests that everything in the Universe is made of vibration, sound.  There are many ways which we can utilize the healing power of sound.

Drumming as a Meditative Spiritual Healing Practice

Drumming connects us to our awareness of rhythm all around us. Rhythm can be found everywhere in nature -  in the sun, moon, stars and seasons, and in our own bodies. Many animals and insects use vibrational drumming signals to communicate. Among humans, scientists say that drumming goes back about eight million years, and is so hard-wired into our biological, social, and spiritual DNA that it is actually an inborn capability and archetypal social activity. Drumming is practiced as a form of communication and connection by all cultures everywhere, and it is believed that rhythms can be passed down from ancestors through DNA as a form of communication and guidance even when they are no longer with us in the physical realm.

The many evidence-based health benefits of drumming are well known. Drum therapy has been successfully used to help patients with anxiety, PTSD, and other emotional traumas. The combination of the sound vibrations and the physical stimulation of drumming removes emotional blocks and stimulates the release of negative cellular memories and emotions. I have personally witnessed the benefits of drumming for brain health, as I discuss in more detail in the memory care section of this website. Drumming has been a successful therapy for recovery from addiction due to the increase in alpha brain waves which calm the mind into a meditative state.

Group drumming is FUN, and builds community by teaching team building and communication skills, discouraging self-centeredness and isolation by bringing people together with a common goal. Drumming puts people in sync with themselves, integrating body, mind, and spirit, promoting confidence and self-esteem. It is good for the heart and circulation, and releases endorphins in the brain to bring happiness and pain relief for arthritis and other physical injuries. By reducing stress hormones and lowering the blood pressure, drumming also boosts your immune system!

Drums are the Best Meditation Teachers

Drumming teaches presence in the most effortless way.  If you want to learn to be “mindful,” play a drum.  The timing, coordination, and creative thinking required to participate in an interactive drum circle literally force the drummer to be present.  Holding a steady rhythm requires focus.  When grounded in the present moment, as in any creative process, fears of the future are minimized and the past is temporarily forgotten.

Gong Healing

Gong healing meditation is an ancient purification/enlightenment practice which can access deep states of consciousness to clear the subconscious and meridians/nadis to free up the flow of life force energy.  To listen to the gong is to enter into an instant state of meditation and balance.  Gong healing brings the mind to a state of clarity and neutrality to realize its own awesome potential, enhancing creativity.  Among a myriad of other health benefits, gong healing improves circulation and strengthens the nervous and endocrine systems.

The vibration of the gong puts pressure on the nervous system to adjust and heal itself, regenerating the parasympathetic nervous system, thus acting as a reset button for the entire nervous system.

The gong is an idiophone, meaning that it resonates with the whole of its being, producing many harmonics from its fundamental tuned note.  This is why it is said that “One who plays the gong plays the Universe.” When played, the gong produces the sound of Creativity, the primordial and original sound “Om.” The sound current opens up the energy pathways and penetrates/bathes every cell and fiber in the body, removing blocks and tension, bringing the body and mind into a state of deep relaxation for healing and rejuvenation. Gong activates and encourages your body’s innate healing wisdom to emphasize your highest vibration, which is your True Self who is already healed, whole and complete. Gong brings out the best in you!

Some other amazing applications for gong healing:

Learning disabilities

Violent and antisocial behavior

Hearing loss (by massaging the thousands of tiny hair cells which fill the inner ear)

Releasing fear and healing trauma

Shifting energy patterns/behaviors/addictions

*Being and attracting Love and Happiness

**To receive the maximum benefit from gong healing, be open, be soft.  Trust in the Universe via the vibration of the gong to help you release your fears and blocks.  Go with the flow, surf the wave of the Infinite, let go to the Infinite!
